Paul Klee wrote that all art is first surface and symbol, but it can also be physically interactive. By playing with light, and a variety of media and techniques, I’m interested in manipulating the translucency and reflectivity of surfaces so that they become animated and charge the space with an interactive energy. A line of shadow, the angle of light, the position of the viewer, can all - momentarily - change the nature of the piece.
By working with a wide range of materials, employing very traditional techniques straight on to digital technology, I offer a variety of ways to compliment, enhance, or completely transform a space. My work – like much contemporary art – references, borrows and appropriates from those who have walked and worked before us. This referential layering complicates – but also strengthens – the viewing of art. Filtered as it is through the lens of individual experience and modern sensibility, this ancient pulse can connect us to a higher level of human aesthetic and meaning. Wherever art is placed - in a home, an office or a public setting – it can serve to define, revitalize and complete that space.
